BITD/TSCO Vegas to Reno Post Race Report
Posted 8/30/08 by Uncle Bob

Before you read this report, Team UBRT Racing would like to take this moment to thank a few companies that make the racing community safer.

First off our team would like to thank Paul at Trail-Glow lighting for there fine products in the lighting industry. There products are not only limited to Off Road lighting but also include lite up number plates that make it much easier for the course workers to see the race vehicle numbers for the scoring purposes at night and also the teams to identify there race vehicles in general. Thank you Paul for your contribution to our team the last few races.

Second, our team would like to thank Geoff and Jason from LEATT-BRACE for there contribution in the safety industry for the participants on motorcycles and now in the race vehicles with the new MOTO-R Neck Brace. This race LEATT-BRACE came on board with Team UBRT Racing with the first Moto-R head and neck restraints available. The team has been using the D-Cell restraints and used the Moto-R Restraints for the 457 mile BITD Vegas to Reno race last weekend. The team never got a chance to try the restraints out before the race but choose through the quality and feel during the fitting session to use the LEATT-BRACE. All the team can say is, what a difference with having the mobility in the truck and with no fatigue at the end of the race. Thank you Geoff and Jason!

Now to the race: The race took place in the tough Nevada desert filled with rocks, sand, gravel and worst of all, 200 miles of the "grueling, power robing Nevada SILT" and started about 132 miles north of Las Vegas in the small quaint town of Beatty.

With the motorcycles and quads starting at 6am, Casey choose to start the 4 wheel vehicles at 10:30am. There was a qualifying race on Thursday morning for the Trick Trucks and Class 1 cars that the team of UBRT Racing choose to pass on. The team choose to take a rear start in class but was unaware that with qualifying, both classes would be combined and that the rear start would put the team starting in the 68th starting position for the 457 mile race to Reno. Start times were every minute which put the truck of Team UBRT Racing starting at 11:38 in the morning.

Bob Schreiner and Nick Cerulle were the combination to start the race with and a driver change at Pit 3 (race mile 116) would take place with Lloyd Snyder stepping in as driver. At this point there were no issues with the truck and the team was moving up through the pack. Lloyd and Nick drove through Pit 4 and Pit 5 while the chase teams were leap frogging up the course to Reno. It was at this point that Bob while driving the truck pulling the race trailer noticed that Bobby Nelson and his chase crew sitting on the side of the road along with other race teams with the Nevada Highway Patrol. Yep, you guessed it. They were all getting tickets for speeding.

It was at this point that Bob radioed back to Stu with his chase crew to see if what he saw was true to his eyes. Sure enough. Bob made the decision that he and Stu had to really pick up there pace to get to Pit 6 where the third chase crew of Brad and Mike were already at so they could make a fuel stop that was needed to take place. Believe it or not, they made it in the nick of time with filling the dump cans with race gas as the truck was entering the pits. With a minor brake issue and fluid replaced along with filling the truck with fuel, the truck left the pits in a matter on minutes. Yep, more trucks and cars were passed by the number 70 truck between Pit 3 and Pit 6.

With Stu and his crew now out of race fuel from doing both Pit 3 and Pit 6, the pit strategy had to be changed. Stu was ordered to go directly to Pit 7 and Bobby to go straight to Pit 8 where driver and co-driver changes were going to take place as with fuel and the light bars were to be installed. Again in the nick of time the crew was ready this time and all transpired in a very smooth rapid sequence. Bob was now back in as driver, Lloyd moved over as co-driver and off they went.

At this point, Brad and Mike the third chase crew was order to now go straight to Pit 9, a remote pit. With the race truck on the way there at about Race Mile 322 the team was passed by Curt Luduc in his Class 8 truck. The first pass of the day and it was from someone that started behind them. The team rolled through Pit 9 with no issues other than soft brakes but never stopped.

At Pit 10, fuel was needed again in order to make it to the finish line about 80 miles away and Bob made the call over the radio with the smelling of gear oil and ordered the pit crew to add a quart of gear oil to the rear end. It wound up being about a 6-7 minute pit stop that seemed forever.

Out of Pit 10 and on to Pit 11 Bob and Lloyd encounter the worst dust they have ever been in with the added sunset right in there eyes. With a slow but positive forward progress being made, the sun finally went down, lights went on and dust started to settle. On to and through Pit 11 with no issues, they proceeded toward the finish line. With the last 15 miles to go, they had to go through the "rock garden of hell" with 7 miles of an up hill rock climb to the summit of the mountains. Just as they reached the summit another race vehicle appeared and they let them go by. It was a Class 10 car running for the lead in there class.

This is where the fun began. In the darkness on the firebreak type roads in the mountains on the tight twisty pine tree filled road about 5 miles from the end of the race coming down the hill, Bob over shot the turn and went off the cliff on the passenger side. With the experience of his driving and the encouragement from Lloyd and his driving experience, Bob managed to miss all except for one beautiful Christmas Tree. They managed to keep the power on and get the race truck back up the hill and onto the race course and cross the finish line in 15th place in TT (Trick Truck) and 26th overall out of 328 starters.

Now comes the part you all didn't know about with reading this report. This was the first race for Team UBRT Racing in the Best in the Desert Series (BITD) let alone a point to point type race. All of this successful forward progress was made with not knowing the race course, not knowing there was 328 entries and most of all, they did this with NO GPS for navigating. That's right. When the team took the truck through Tech and Contingency on Thursday they stopped the PCI Trailer for the race course down load for there navigational purposes. PCI cleared all the trails that were installed in the GPS to allow room for their down load. Once they installed their down load, they noticed that the GPS couldn't find the Satellites. They along with the team worked for hours into Thursday night to try and get the GPS to work with no success. The only option was to install another GPS unit which they elected not to do and drove by the seat of there pants.
