M.O.R.E. Beard Seats 1450 Shootout/Kartek 300

Post Race Report
First off I would like to thank Jim Clements owner of the MORE Series (www.moreracing.net) that our team (UBRT Racing) races in. As most of you know, I had a major part in putting the Beard Seats 1450 Shootout together with Jim's Kartek 300 race in Lucerne this last weekend. This was a very controversial race over the last 5 months with bringing the 1450 Class of trucks to his series. At first the "buggy guys" were not real happy until I jump in with both feet on multiple web sites explaining how I felt about MORE and my assurance that this will be a race that ALL will talk about.
All I can say is WOW, what a race this was. I have heard from many sources that this was the biggest race in 15 years in the High Desert. After reading on all the web sites, everything was the best that it could have been.
Second, I would like to also mention that we (all families in racing) as a desert racing family had a very unfortunate mishap with a helicopter while filming this race went down. Although all 3 on board are alive, 1 had cuts and bruises, another has 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 50% of his body and the photographer Steve Kurtyka received 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 80% of his body. The fortunate part is the burns were not on either one of there faces. They are excepted to live with some rehabilitation in the future. The LORD was looking over them. I also ask for all of you to say a little prayer for them. Thanks
On to the good stuff now:
As a type of promoter for our class in this race I felt that I needed to do the P/R work and help with the organization of the 1450 Class. We had 51 enter the race with a total at one point of over 175 cars and trucks entered. The finale count was 139 started with 35 being the 1450 class. With this said and done our team chose to put the co-driver in the drivers seat and the crew chief in as co-driver. This would be Lloyd Snyder as driver and Jeff Moore from Chassisfab as co-driver. Both of these guys were rookies in there positions. I worked under our second crew chief, Jeff Carley and paced the whole time back and forth like an expecting father for 4 hours.
What a blast the 2 of them had with starting the race in the 17th position and you probably can guess by now, yep, they WON the race. They didn't just win, they won by 34 minutes and 9 seconds over second place. They told me that I might just lose my job as driver and have to stick to being a car owner. That's a big laugh! ha ha, real funny guys!
Pit strategy got thrown off and you'll see why in the lap times:
- lap 1 - 1:09:59 40.8 mph average with changing a flat tire (cut down) do to a rock (rookies lol)
- lap 2 - 1:03:04 45.3 mph average with putting a fresh spare back on the truck and dumping 1 can of gas (10 gals) as we also were pitting after start finish line.
- lap 3 - 58:33 48.8 mph average and fastest lap in class and no pit stop.
- lap 4 - 1:05:09 43.8 mph average with a pit for fuel and yes, a pee break (we need to work on this one Jeff) lol. We had also picked up the lead on this lap and I told them to pace them selves at this point and just finish the race.
As far as the truck goes, we had a few very minor problems to which didn't really effect the truck, driver/co-driver or team. This are things that can be replaced, repaired or talked about in our post race meeting. All in all we had a fantastic race and I believe all had a great time. This win give us 7 wins in 10 races with the first 2 races being dnf's so really we would like to look at it as 7 wins in the last 8 races. Not bad, not bad at all.
We had some spectators come out for this race for our team and willing to help in anyway we needed them. I wont to them them for all there support and being there for us. They were:
- Bill Malik and Klaus from a pro rally team at Valencia Volvo in Canyon Country.
- Cory from HotWeyer Performance chief engine builder for Team Orbit (Mike Ruane/Larry Rossler)
- Rick and Debbie from RG Brake and Alignment in Valencia.
- Dennis and his son Dan from Dukes Motorsports (BITD #1440/Score #40 Chett Hughman) which was on standby for co-driver.
- Jason from Chassisfab.
- All our children, daughter and there husbands and grandchildren.
Most of all our wives and pit support for there outstanding jobs they all did. They are:
Joyce, Joyce, Carol, Ed (Papa Crone), Cherish, Mike Nelson, also all the others that I missed and for the pit support it was:
Allen and Eric Vandal along with Tess working Pit B with radio work extra tires, Cameron and Chris White with radio work, pit box and tires at Pit C. Without you guys and girls, we couldn't race the way we do. Great job to all of you and thank you for all showing up. It means a lot to this team. Also Tim at Beard Seats for working with me on putting this together as a Class Sponsor for this race.
I also have to say thank you to Mike Ruane, Team Orbit for bailing us out at the last minute by loaning us all there wheels for this race Wednesday night when we found out the new wheels we just got that morning were defective just before we were leaving for the race.
