MORE Balls Out 250 Post-Race Report
Posted 03/21/2009 by Uncle Bob

Let's do this a little different this time. Here's a video to keep your interest in the post race report. It was in the grueling Barstow Desert where the race took place with the Start/Finish area off Hwy 247 next to the Slash X, a famous desert bar. Temps were to be in the high 70's to low 80's which wound up being a perfect day about 80*.

Race was to start at 8:30 Saturday morning with the LEATT-BRACE/Trail-Glow #70 TT starting 2nd off the line.

The team choose to make this a one day event with leaving at 4:45 Saturday morning and returning after the race. Early Tech was granted to the team with the appointment set at 7:00AM and then the drivers meeting for everyone was to be at 7:30.

Here we go........... the team left on time as scheduled from Bob's house in Saugus, Ca. figuring with the 2hr and 15 minute that would be plenty of time. Half way there about 10 mile out of Victorville, boom, there goes the right rear tire on the trailer and with Tim on the radio following behind riding shotgun with Stu in Chase 2 yelling "shredded tire, shredded tire". With no spare and it being a borrowed flatbed trailer, they opted to put the right front tire on the right rear and continue at a very slow pace. Driving up the 15 freeway at 40mph about 20 miles from the race course and the time being 6:45, Bob decided to stop, unload the race truck and beat feet it across the open desert to make it to Tech in time. Tim took over driving of the truck and trailer and met up at Tech with the rest of the team just before the drivers meeting. Bob made it to Tech in 10 minutes, just in time.

The race started on time and with the starting intervals set at 30 seconds, Bob and his co-driver Bob Silva started chasing the leader for miles. Around RM18, the #70 Trophy Truck was on the tail of the #130 Class 1 car in the severe dust and bamm, the 130 car made a slight right turn and up off the course the #70 went.... through bushes and a rock pile the #70 went. With mirrors now folded in, bushes and branches sticking out from everywhere on the front of the truck, they slow a little, regrouped, cleaned out the windshield area (remember there is no windshield) and off they went again. With watching the guages and the terrain, they had a great pace going again but had a severe vibration now. With main pit at RM32 just before start/finish, Bob called in to be ready to look over the truck. The truck stopped and main pit made the determination to keep going that all looked OK.

Lap 2 was a good lap but very discouraging to the driver and co-driver with them only able to pull a top speed now of 80mph across the Barstow Desert. Knowing this, a pace was set in the race truck to be unbelievably consistent as the race time sheet results showed. Pit stops for fuel were made on Lap 3 and 5.

Lap 6 and 7 were the best times the team has ever had. When they left the start line for there 6th lap, main let the team know that the #109 Class 1 car was on there tail-end. The #70 Trophy Truck was able to hold them off throughout lap 6 and all the way to RM24 of lap 7. It was at that time that both Bob's decided to let the #109 car go by and try to push the #109 car into making a mistake. Reason for this is the #109 car started 3 minutes behind the #70 Trophy Truck and on corrected time the #70 needed to cross the finish line 3:01 seconds ahead of the #109 car. When all said and done, the #135 car of Mike Pacewiczh came in 1st with an 11 minute lead, the #109 of Ward/Jeffers finished 2nd and team UBRT Racing in the #70 Trophy Truck finished a strong 3rd despite running gear damage. After all this, the team of UBRT Racing still retains the 2009 points lead.

After the race, it was then that the team noticed that there was a bent drive-shaft, the skid place for the rear-end was ripped off and there was 3 of the 5 pinion bolts sheared off leaving the pinion gear flexing in the rear-end.

Lap times:
Lap 1 - 39:26 (Pit stop)
Lap 2 - 39:02
Lap 3 - 40:02 (Pit stop for fuel)
Lap 4 - 38:07*
Lap 5 - 39:59 (Pit stop for fuel)
Lap 6 - 38:02*
Lap 7 - 38:06*

Notice the * on the times, 3 laps on a 32 mile race course within 5 seconds of each other. The team was on their game with knowing their lines of the course. Total time was 4:32:44 with an average speed of 49.9mph.

Driver was Bob Schreiner, Co-driver was Bob Silva, main pit support was headed off by Lloyd Snyder, Jeff Moore, Nick Cerulle, Brandon Silva, Wayne Kapanski, the 2 unknowns helping with fueling the truck that Lloyd can't remember there names LOL, Tess Snyder and Sheila Yumbar as score keepers, Stu Thayer and Tim Bonino in Chase 2, Alan Vandal and his friend chasing and videoing the race and Eric Vandal as roaming help. Also a little help came from Paul Jr at Trail-Glow with his support. Thanks everyone!
