Team UBRT Girls Win the MORE/Damzl Powder Puff Race!
Posted 10/20/06 by Uncle Bob

What a memorable and emotional weekend this was. It was the inaugural Race for the Cure of Women's Breast Cancer with proceeds going to the Ceder Sinai Women Breast Cancer Research. The posted proceeds raised so far on the MORE Racing web site are $51,175.00 and rising.

This race was put on by Damzl (www.damzl.com) through the MORE Racing Organization (www.moreracing.net) along with extreme help from various people like Jennifer Clemison, Shelby Tolbert, Heather from Damzl, Ron Mathews and of course, Jim Clements, President of the MORE Series and also all the race teams that the list goes on and on.

I would personally like to thank Jazz Products for there generous donation to the raffle. DJ Safety for there help in making these girls safe on our team and looking the best with there new driving suits. Joe, you out done yourself! Thank you VERY VERY much! Crow Safety is also included with there donation in some of our safety items we now have on the truck. Mike from Mike's Transmission in Palmdale for dropping everything they were doing to get us our transmission that we blew up the prior weekend. The service was outstanding and the trans worked flawlessly and that converter, WOW! Thanks Mike. Also Ron from Ron's Rear-Ends in Mission Hills for getting our new parts in the rear-end in such a short notice.

Here we go:

Thursday - I showed up early to be able to test the truck as we just finished installing our new Mike's Transmission Custom TH400 with a custom torque converter Wednesday and wanted to make sure of no problems or leaks. All was well as I took a lap around the course in the afternoon. Bobby and Rochelle Nelson (one of the drivers) also showed up Thursday night.

Friday - Rochelle got in the drivers seat and myself in the co-drivers seat and off we went for a lap to mark the GPS so she could navigate herself around. When we returned, Sheila Nelson (Rochelle's mother-in-law and co-driver) jumped in and off they went for a couple more laps. By this time it was noon and Danyelle Thayer showed up and after we got her settled in, Danyelle (another driver) got in the drivers seat along with Rochelle as co-driver and off they went for a few laps.

Now, so nobody gets confused, Danyelle Thayer, Rochelle Nelson are sisters and my daughter. Sheila Nelson is Rochelle's mother-in-law and Tess Snyder is Lloyd and Joyce's daughter. Did you figure all that out yet? Good!

OK, Saturday. Do to the amount of entries that this race drew, MORE had to split up the field so nobody would run over the slower cars on the 21 mile race course in Barstow. Our team was placed in the second group which started at 12:00 and had a 3 hour time limit to do as many laps as possible with the last car leaving the start/finish line for there last lap at 3:00.

With 5 girls involved on our team in this race we needed to get each one in the truck so the lap times varied do to driver and co-driver changes. And with neither of them having any real race experience as drivers or co-drivers except Danyelle with only having one lap as a co-driver, doing the changes in a timely matter was all to new for them.

So, here we go:

Lap 1. With our team working together on a strategy in the morning and the way the girls drove on Friday with doing laps times in the 35 minute range, we felt that doing 4 laps was going to be great and maybe a 5th lap for a bonus if all went well. We oped to put Danyelle in as driver for the first lap. Lap was a clean one with a time of 36:46 minutes. Not bad in race traffic and a co-driver change 100 yards before start/finish for the first lap.

Lap 2. Danyelle drove and had Tess as co-driver this lap and landed a 37:22 lap time which included a driver and co-driver change at the end again 100 yards before start/finish.

Lap 3. Rochelle is now at the wheel along with Sheila as co-driver and landed a 33:03 lap time which again included a co-driver change at the end to put Danyelle in as co-driver.

Lap 4. Now that the 2 sisters are in the truck, they decided to lay down a great lap time of 29:32 and we let them pass through the pits to take another lap. This lap had no pit stop!

Lap 5 & bonus. Here's where it gets good. The girls are now giggling and trying to figure when there next nail appointment is as they have bitten all there nails off running a lap to remember. Halfway through this lap, we at main pit realized that with the speed they are carrying, they might get a bonus lap if they can make it to the start/finish line before 3:00. Guess what, they made it there at 2:53:53 for a lap time of 28:44. Not knowing if they could make it one more lap or not with the fuel they had left, we made a mad dash to an area about 200 yards AFTER the start/finish line with fuel for a quick pit stop and being we had to stop, we decided to give one more ride. That person was Sheila that got put back in the co-drivers seat and when they came around, they had a 31:19 minute lap which included the pit stop and received the checkered flag for the win.

As I set here typing this e-mail to all of you, I have and will always have nothing but great memories about this race. The girls did an absolute fantastic job handling this 5,000lb, big Horse Power Race truck. This truck will be at the next Powder Puff race with these girls back in it.

I would like to also mention that there where more family members out there for this race and actually all my family members from my mother Betty and Greg, brother Steve and Eric, sister Sue and all of her family and in-laws as with my in-laws, Marilyn and George. There wasn't one family member in our group that wasn't there and it was wonderful.

Back to my sister Sue and my brother-in-law Larry St George, They run a 7 Open truck. The 707 St George Motorsports Ford Ranger. Kassie (my nephew Shawn's wife) was driver of record for this race and Veronica (my other nephew Nick's girl friend) rode as co-driver as with my niece Cassie. I want to also mention and congratulate them as they to toke the win in there class.

Last, to the over 400 addresses this is going out to, I would like to invite all to any or all of our races especially next years Powder Puff Race. I will try to keep my web site updated so you all can be informed as to when and where all our races will be.

Thank you all!
