M.O.R.E. ORAF 400 Post Race Report

Here we go again with a little drama with the UBRT Racing camp!

Where do we start? Thursday with a blown rear gear? OK, we change the rear gear Friday morning and put a little lower gear ratio in the truck as we thought we lost a gear. To find out what condition it was in, the Class 8 truck #847 borrowed it Saturday during the race with a warning to take it easy as it is giving a bad vibration on the deceleration side but they took it anyway and finished the race in 3rd place in Class 8. Congrats guys!

Saturday the race started at 4:00 in the afternoon for the 400 mile race with 4 cars starting at a time in a drag race style from the lake bed up to the rock pile 3 miles up the race course. We got a good start and was 2nd to the rock pile and stayed anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds behind the leader for the first lap and a half of the 40.4 mile race course. At the 37 mile marker on lap 2 we blew a tire on the left rear at about 100 mph and it took out our rear brakes. We changed the tire and when we got to main pit at mile marker 40, we fueled the truck and put a fresh spare on. We were pitted just before the start/finish line on the 40.4 mile race course. I want to mention that with the blown motor 2 weeks prior, the motor ran flawless and we were able to set the 2nd fastest lap time for the whole event. Ron Brant in car 101 had a 38.45 minute lap for a 63.3 mile per hour average lap and we set a 39:44 minute lap for a 61.4 mile per hour average lap. We were to only two race cars to get under the 40 minute lap time out of 132 race cars that started. Not bad at all.

Lap 3 and 4 were some fast laps also with no problems. On lap 5 about mile marker 18 we broke an axle and caught an access road across the desert back to our main pit for 2 new axles, a new drive shaft along with a driver/co-driver change. Lloyd and Nick got in, returned to the point of our exiting of the race course at race mile 20 and stepped up the pace a little with clicking off some top speeds in the neighborhood of 108 mph. On lap 6 in the darkness they blew the right front tire at mile marker 30 and change it only to break all the wheel studs on the left rear at mile marker 33. Off went to crew with a spare hub and wheel studs. When we got there and meet up with one of our other remote chase crew trucks with Tim Bonino and Stu Thayer, we were able to replace the wheel studs without any problems. It was easy with no brake rotor or caliper in the way.

At the end of lap 7 Lloyd and Nick pitted for fuel only to only find the left front tire almost flat this time. Now comes the drama. We are out of spare tires and wheels. We decide to put some air in the tire to cross the start/finish line 100 yards away to receive points for that lap. In the mean time one of our team members went looking for wheels and tires so we could try and finish the race. WAHOO, Whitey found some from John Vaughn in the truck 1429. John mentioned to take what we needed. We grabbed 2 tires, one for the left front and one for the spare. Off the boys went to finish the last 2 laps of the race in 5th place.

Speaking of finishing in 5th place, that gave team UBRT Racing enough points to take over the points lead and show that our team has never given up nor will ever give up. Here's a link to the points sheet on the MORE web site - http://moreracing.net/points.htm

We had an awesome group of team members this race and I have to thank all of them this race for there dedication. They all did a great job from main pit and remote pit support to radio work with keeping the drivers fully informed as to where they stood at all time with the competition. We had 3 remote pits this race with Ron and Lisa at Pit 1, Chris White at Pit 2 and Stu Thayer and Tim Bonino were at Pit 3. Main pit consisted of Jeff Carley, Tim Kruger, Nick Cerulle, Alan Vandal, Bob, Whitey, Ken Keegel and Dan from Coyote Race #797 and Bob Schreiner.
