M.O.R.E. Toys for Tots 200 Post Race Report
Posted 12/19/07 by Uncle Bob

It was a cold wet race! Yes, Thursday produced same lazy cool weather with a little down time to watch movies and clear our minds to focus on the year end race. Bob showed up in the early morning and Nick showed up in the early afternoon to cloudy skies with the threat of rain so we choose not to pre-run the course as this race has a history of having rain issues.

Friday morning we woke up around 6:30 to the sound of rain drops on our rigs. It rained all day without stopping. The puddles on the course looking out the windows of our rigs looked like lakes and were telling us to relax and pray for clear skies come race day. Around dinner time, we ate and choose to take advantage of the silence of no rain drops. We grabbed our race gear, helmets and car cover and went to Tech which was held at the legendary Slash X, a famous bar/cafe in the middle of the desert and movie set about a mile away. Yep, it started raining again but we got through Tech in about an hour.

Race Day, we all woke up to the sunny skies with a few broken clouds blowing by at about 25mph. The team was all present and after a short meeting, we went to the starting line and were 8th off the starting line and planned on setting a mild pace with not being able to pre-run for a safe race and not really trying to win the race but to win the championship to which we were only 7 points away from. With Bob as driver of record this race and Lloyd having to sit out do to medical issues, Stu Thayer (Bob's son-in-law) took the first half of the race in the right seat on the larger 33 mile track of the 2 race course venue. They started by passing the 132 car within the first mile putting them in 7th place. Cruising at a mild pace through all the dips in the course full of water, they got a little love tap from one of the most renowned off road race car engine builder Leon Patton and putting them back into 8 place.

Mile marker 15, a vibration started and knowing the feeling, the rear-end gear was going away. The call was made to have a new gear brought out and for all close chase teams to meet at the 19.5 mile marker to change the gear. By the time the chase teams arrived, Bob and Stu had the rear-end gear removed and waiting for the new gear. Total down time for a gear replacement in the field and having the race truck back up and running was about 45 minutes and most of it was waiting for the gear to show up. What a team effort is all that we can say.

Lap 2 and 3 were great laps and at the beginning of lap 4, it was time for the scheduled pit stop and co-driver change. At this time Nick Cerulle stepped in and off went Bob and Nick to set some consistent blistering lap times on the shorter 13 mile track. The team crossed the finish line in 8th in class and took second place in the 2007 Points Championship in Class 1.

Lap times on the 33 mile course were:
Lap 1 - 1:44:55 (broke)
Lap 2 - 43:51
Lap 3 - 42:22
Lap 4 - 44:45 (with a co-driver change)

Lap times on the 13 mile course were:
Lap 1 - 16:04
Lap 2 - 15:52
Lap 3 - 15:56
Lap 4 - 15:57
Lap 5 - 16:37 (with a quick fuel stop)

With all the issues for Team UBRT Racing in the 2007 season from personal issues of some, major medical issues for a few others, lose of family members of other team members and mechanical issues of the truck, this was one heck of a season for Team UBRT Racing and with all the prayers that have been given in the 2007 season, we feel that these issues for all has brought this team even closer as a group of race team members with lots of dedication, listening and big shoulders from all for all to cry on. There's something about this team and when the word "Team" is mentioned, it's like love among a group of people that is unconditional love for each other. The emotional support for each other without question, to the dinners, to general get togethers, to working on the truck and just being there for each other is just truly overwhelming.
